Live in Sun Ridge

A subdivision of the 1990s and early 2000s just east of Loop 375, where seven in ten homes were lived in by their owners in 2020, Socorro ISD's school rate puts the tax stack below the El Paso ISD example, and the reference point sits where four elementary zones nearly meet, so the school answer depends on the street.

Sun Ridge was recorded plat by plat from 1994, when Sun Ridge #1 was filed on the City's layer, to 2005, on the ground east of Joe Battle Boulevard between Pebble Hills Boulevard and Montwood Drive. This guide takes the City of El Paso's Sun Ridge North and Sun Ridge South neighborhoods together as its boundary, about 660 acres where the 2020 census counted 7,289 residents and 2,319 homes, down from 7,693 residents but up from 2,238 homes on about the same ground in 2010, and owners lived in 70% of the occupied homes. Every block is in Socorro ISD, whose 2025 rate brings the five units on the bill to 2.501893 per $100 before exemptions, against 2.643693 on an El Paso ISD address. Zillow's typical value for ZIP code 79938, which holds every resident here, was $255,700 in August 2026, but the ZIP held 96,353 people in 2020, thirteen times the guide's, so it is not a Sun Ridge price.

Owner-held houses past Loop 375, where the street decides the school

The City of El Paso's Sun Ridge North and Sun Ridge South neighborhoods (FID 12 and FID 13 on its Neighborhood Boundaries layer, 326 and 333 acres on the layer, about 660 together), traced against the Census Bureau's road file: Joe Battle Boulevard, Loop 375, on the west; Pebble Hills Boulevard on the north, with a short line on the northeast through the Tierra streets toward Zaragoza Road; Montwood Drive on the south; and on the east Sun Chariot Street and the eastern ends of the Sun streets north of it. Zaragoza Road runs diagonally through from the Joe Battle and Montwood corner and divides North from South. 781 residents of Sun Ridge North also live on recorded Tierra del Este plats; this site counts them here and leaves them out of its Tierra del Este guide. The Las Tierras Neighborhood Association's filed area takes in 4,242 of the guide's residents. All of it is in El Paso County, Socorro ISD and City Council District 5.

Sun Ridge was filed one unit at a time, from Sun Ridge #1 in 1994 to #8 in 2005, on the ground just east of Joe Battle Boulevard, Loop 375. This guide takes the City of El Paso's Sun Ridge North and Sun Ridge South neighborhoods together as its boundary, about 660 acres between Pebble Hills Boulevard and Montwood Drive, with Zaragoza Road cutting diagonally between the two. The 2020 census counted 7,289 residents and 2,319 homes, against 7,693 residents in 2,238 homes in 2010: more houses, fewer people, and this guide found nothing that says why. Owners lived in 70% of the occupied homes.

The school answer depends on the street, not the neighborhood. Every block is in the Socorro Independent School District, but its boundary maps split the guide four ways at the elementary level: 2,872 residents are zoned to Lujan-Chavez, 2,022 to Elfida P. Chavez, 1,684 to Helen Ball and 711 to Sgt. Roberto Ituarte, and the high schools split too: Montwood takes 3,706 residents and Pebble Hills 2,872. The reference point sits within 10 meters of three zone lines, so the schools returned there describe a corner, not the guide. The Texas Education Agency's 2026 ratings run from A (91) at Lujan-Chavez to C (78) at Helen Ball, which fell from B (84) the year before.

The tax stack is lighter here than on the city's example. The five units on a City of El Paso and Socorro ISD address add to 2.501893 per $100 for 2025, against 2.643693 with El Paso ISD, because Socorro ISD's school rate is the lowest of the city's four districts. Every resident is in ZIP code 79938, where Zillow's typical value was $255,700 in August 2026, up 1.9% on the year: a homestead valued there owes about $5,022 a year, about $-164 less than the same house in El Paso ISD would, and without the exemption about $6,397. The ZIP held 96,353 people in 2020, thirteen times the guide's, so it is not a Sun Ridge price. The arithmetic is on the El Paso page. No management district, tax increment zone, utility district or historic district reaches the guide.

Both of FEMA's maps leave Sun Ridge out of the flood zones. Unlike most of the city, the whole guide is on a digital panel of FEMA's effective map, panel 4802140043B of 2006, and none of it is in the 1% or the 0.2% annual chance zone. The preliminary countywide map FEMA issued on 8 August 2025, not yet in force, shows none either. Mapped zones are not the water: the monsoon brings more than half the year's 223 mm from July to September, and in 2006 the city had a year's rain in two days. This guide found no record of where that storm reached in Sun Ridge, and a homeowners policy does not cover flood.

The bus comes every 45 minutes. Sun Metro's Route 55 runs up Zaragoza Road through the guide about every 45 minutes, from the Mission Valley Transit Center to the Upper East Side Transit Center, where Montana Brio starts its run to Five Points every 30 to 35 minutes. Route 53 runs along Montwood Drive every half hour at midday. The Hospitals of Providence East Campus is about 2.3 km north on Joe Battle Boulevard.

Worth knowing before you commit
Run the address, not the name
Four elementary zones and two high school zones cross 660 acres

  • Run the exact address through Socorro ISD's Street Search before a school counts in the decision
  • Work the tax bill out on the Socorro ISD stack, not the El Paso ISD example, and file for the homestead exemption
  • Ask the El Paso Central Appraisal District for the property's current value and exemptions
  • Price a flood policy anyway: the maps show no zone, and the monsoon does not read maps

How Sun Ridge got here

  • 1990Socorro ISD builds Montwood High School on Montwood Drive, west of what becomes Sun Ridge; it is still the high school zoned for about half of the guide's residents.
  • 1994Sun Ridge #1, about 37 acres, is recorded, the earliest plat inside the line on the City's Subdivisions layer.
  • 1999Sun Ridge #2 to #7 follow from 1995 to 1999, each of 19 to 33 acres.
  • 2002Sun Ridge #9 to #14 are recorded in 2001 and 2002, #13 the largest at about 41 acres, with the first Sombras del Sol plats.
  • 2005Sun Ridge #8, about 37 acres, is the last of the numbered Sun Ridge plats; Montwood Heights, Barcelona Estates and the commercial plats along Zaragoza Road fill in after it.
  • 2006The Las Tierras Neighborhood Association starts on 15 June and registers with the City on 10 August; its filed area now takes in 4,242 of the guide's residents.
  • 2010The census counts 7,693 residents and 2,238 homes on the blocks inside today's line.
  • 2020The census counts 7,289 residents and 2,319 homes; owners live in 1,562 of the 2,239 occupied homes.
  • 2025The Hospitals of Providence East Campus on Joe Battle Boulevard starts a $20 million expansion from 218 to 238 beds, due by December. FEMA issues its preliminary countywide flood map on 8 August; it puts none of the guide in a flood zone and is not yet in force.
  • 2026The Texas Education Agency rates Lujan-Chavez Elementary A (91) and Helen Ball Elementary C (78), down from B (84) the year before.

02: Sal Berroteran Park and the spray park

Two City parks inside the line, a spray park across the boulevard

Inside the guide, Sal Berroteran Park on Sun Country Drive has about ten acres of tennis, soccer and basketball, and Carlos Bombach Park in the Sombras del Sol plats has a playground. North across Pebble Hills Boulevard, Salvador Rivas Jr. Park keeps one of the City's nine spray parks, open from 23 May to 13 September in 2026. For open country, Hueco Tanks State Park is half an hour or more northeast, by permit.

What the map does not show: the heat and the dust. The 1991 to 2020 normal at El Paso International brings about 117 days a year reaching 32 °C, and dust events, about 22 a year, rise from March to June.
