Structured facts

Population, geography, housing, tax and similar figures identify the period and geography they describe. Older figures remain labelled with their original year rather than being presented as current. Where two publishers measure the same concept differently, the guide identifies the series rather than treating the numbers as interchangeable.

Housing calculations

Canadian calculators use semi-annual compounding and the applicable provincial transfer, registration and mortgage-insurance rules. American calculators use monthly compounding, fixed-loan and private-mortgage-insurance conventions, plus state and county costs. Defaults are starting points, not quotes. Every consequential input can be changed because a citywide benchmark rarely describes an individual purchase.

Travel and amenity estimates

Most distances and travel times begin at a documented community reference point. Straight-line distance is adjusted by an urban-road factor and a distance-tiered speed model, with access time added. Distances to linear corridors and clearly in-community facilities can be estimated by hand. Traffic, weather, construction and the exact address can materially change a trip, so calculated travel is shown as a range rather than false precision.

Editorial observations

Descriptions of character, trade-offs and likely practical consequences are editorial context. They are not municipal designations or guarantees about every street. The work is research-led and should not be interpreted as firsthand experience unless a guide expressly identifies it as such.

Sources and review dates

Each guide lists the sources currently available. Primary government, municipal, statistical and original-data publishers are preferred. A source without a verified public URL may be cited without a link; a URL is never guessed from a title. A review date appears only after an individual editorial review and does not make every underlying dataset contemporaneous.

Update priorities

Market indexes are reviewed when a new period is incorporated. Annual tax schedules and other recurring public charges are reviewed for their applicable year. Legislative or methodological changes receive priority because they can invalidate a calculation even when the displayed market price has not changed. Corrections affecting a purchase, school, insurance, tax or safety decision receive priority over stylistic changes.

Publication and indexing

New community guides must pass content validation before they are marked indexable: the build fails on a record that claims to be indexable without being published, and draft and incomplete pages are excluded from the sitemap. Editorial review is a separate thing and is recorded guide by guide, not enforced as a gate. Of the 672 indexable guides on the site, 78 carry a review date; the rest say “Written by” rather than “Written and reviewed by” and show the day the page last changed instead. Municipality-level calculator pages remain available from their local hubs but are intentionally excluded from search indexing when the underlying functionality is shared; the substantive municipality hub is the canonical search entry point.

AI-assisted drafts

Automation may help organize research or drafts, but it is not evidence. Factual publication should remain source-backed and editorially reviewed. Unsupported generated claims are not an acceptable source, and producing a page at scale is not a substitute for giving that page an independent purpose.
