Live in Shawnee Slopes

A 1986 golf-course community whose fairways council cleared for 1,400 homes in 2013, with Fish Creek along the whole northern edge.

Shawnee Slopes was established in 1986 around its own golf course, and is named for the Shawnee people. The 2021 census counted 2,020 residents in 885 private households, 88 per cent of them owners, with a median household income of $100,000 in 2020. Fish Creek Provincial Park forms the entire northern boundary and Macleod Trail runs the eastern edge, but the community's real story is the golf course: it closed on 2 October 2011, and in February 2013 council approved redeveloping the land for about 1,400 homes as Shawnee Park. The census caught the result, with 21 per cent of the occupied stock built between 2016 and 2021 against 40 per cent from the 1980s.

01: The Community

A golf course that became a second community

Bounded by Fish Creek Provincial Park to the north, Macleod Trail to the east, James McKevitt Road to the south, and Evergreen Street SW to the west. Ward 13.

Shawnee Slopes was established in 1986 around its own golf course, and takes its name from the Shawnee people. At the 2021 census: 2,020 residents in 885 private households, 88% of them owners, with a median household income of $100,000 in 2020. Fish Creek Provincial Park forms the entire northern boundary; Macleod Trail runs the eastern edge.

The two halves. The closure of the Shawnee Slopes Golf Course was announced on 13 June 2011 and the course shut to the public on 2 October 2011. In February 2013 city council approved redeveloping the golf course lands to add 1,400 homes, and the census shows the build: 21% of the occupied dwellings date from 2016 to 2021, against 40% from the 1980s and 24% from the 1990s.

What that means day to day. You are choosing between two housing products under one community name. 59% of dwellings are single-detached, but 20% are apartments in buildings under five storeys and 13% semi-detached, almost all of that on the old fairways. The community is also older and more international than the city: 27% of residents are 65 or over against 13% citywide, and 41% are immigrants against 33%.

The park and the train. Fish Creek Provincial Park, 13.48 km² and more than 100 km of trails, is the whole northern edge. Fish Creek-Lacombe station at 14300 Shawnee Gate SW has had 1,130 park and ride spaces since 9 October 2001, and it shows: 14% of employed residents take transit, against 9% across Calgary.

Worth knowing before you commit
A 1986 community, rebuilt in part since 2014
Two housing eras on one street grid

  • 64% of the occupied stock was built between 1981 and 2000. Those houses carry the era's full inspection list: wiring, plumbing, original windows
  • Shawnee Park's density is noticeably higher than the rest of the community. Check the site plan, not just the address
  • Macleod Trail carries real commuter traffic on the eastern edge
  • Renters are just 12% of households against 31% citywide, which keeps turnover low but the resale market thin

How Shawnee Slopes got here

  • 1986Shawnee Slopes is established around its own golf course, south of Fish Creek Provincial Park, and named for the Shawnee people.
  • 1981 to 2000The original build-out: 40 per cent of today's occupied dwellings date from 1981 to 1990 and 24 per cent from the 1990s.
  • 2001Fish Creek-Lacombe station opens on 9 October at 14300 Shawnee Gate SW, with 1,130 park and ride spaces, serving Shawnee Slopes, Evergreen, Midnapore and Millrise.
  • 2011The closure of the Shawnee Slopes Golf Course is announced on 13 June, and the course shuts to the public on 2 October.
  • 2013In February, city council approves the redevelopment of the golf course lands to add 1,400 homes.
  • 2016 to 202121 per cent of the community's occupied dwellings are built in this window, the Shawnee Park redevelopment showing up in the census.
  • 2021The federal census counts 2,020 residents in 885 private households, 12 per cent of them renting, with a median household income of $100,000 in 2020.

02: Fish Creek Provincial Park

The park as the whole northern edge

Fish Creek Provincial Park, 13.48 km² and one of the largest urban parks in North America, runs the entire length of Shawnee Slopes' northern boundary, with trail access from several streets rather than a single formal entrance.

What the map does not show: park-backing lots on the original 1980s streets are the quiet premium here: everything else in the community is a short walk to the same trail, park frontage or not.

Method: distances and drive times are estimated from the centre of the community to each destination using Calgary's road grid, and are rounded to honest ranges rather than presented as precise figures. Shawnee Park's own retail row covers routine errands; everything larger means a short drive north or across Macleod Trail.

04: Gyms & Fitness

Every gym within reach

The Shawnessy YMCA is the nearest full-service option, a few minutes south, though YMCA Calgary publishes its address and hours and no list of what is inside. Fish Creek's trail network, right on the community's doorstep, is what most residents actually use daily.

05: Schools

Centennial takes the senior years, the rest is unpublished

Centennial High School lists Shawnee Slopes among the ten communities it serves, for grades 10 to 12 at 55 Sun Valley Boulevard SE. Samuel W. Shaw School exists under the CBE, but its page gives no grade range, address or attendance area, and nothing this guide could open places a school of any kind inside Shawnee Slopes itself.

Designated schoolsBoth boardsNo publisher this guide could open places an elementary school inside Shawnee Slopes. The CBE assigns a designated school from the home address and the chosen programme, and the Calgary Catholic School District's site refuses automated clients. Confirm for a specific address.

Alberta funds Catholic education the same way it funds public education, so there is no tuition for a resident student at either board. The CBE assigns a designated school from the home address through a lookup that cannot be read from a static page, and the Calgary Catholic School District's site refuses automated clients. Confirm the designation for a specific address before you buy.

06: A Year Here

Month by month, what living here looks like

Not a highlights reel: the actual annual rhythm, including the dates residents have to remember.

01
January
Deep winter
  • Fish Creek's valley trail along the northern edge ices hard where the escarpment shades it all day
  • The old golf course's fairways are unrecognizable under the new Shawnee Park streets, but the tree lines still trace the original holes
  • Fish Creek–Lacombe's open platform catches the full wind off the Macleod Trail corridor
  • Deer move off the escarpment into the older bungalow yards on the coldest nights
02
February
Late winter
  • A chinook can strip Fish Creek's valley trail bare of snow in an afternoon
  • Shawnee Park's newer townhouse blocks catch more wind than the sheltered 1980s streets to the west
  • Southcentre's parkade fills fastest on the coldest weekends, when the mall becomes the default outing
  • The old clubhouse pad, now a pocket park, is the coldest open corner in the community
03
March
Thaw
  • Runoff off the escarpment turns the Fish Creek trail to soup well before the streets above dry out
  • Framing crews are back on the last unfinished Shawnee Park lots as soon as the ground firms up
  • Cleats are the right footwear on the shaded stretch of the valley trail
  • Macleod Trail's shoulder ice lingers longest where the original 1980s berms still shade the road
04
April
Spring
  • Fish Creek's full trail network along the northern boundary reopens for the season
  • The last unsold Shawnee Park show homes get their spring landscaping
  • Robins and red-winged blackbirds return to the creek valley below the escarpment
  • Garden centres open along Macleod Trail south of Southcentre
05
May
Green-up
  • The 1980s spruce canopy on the original streets leafs out well ahead of Shawnee Park's young trees
  • Sunset past 9pm turns the escarpment path into an evening loop for both halves of the community
  • Weekend traffic on Macleod Trail thickens as Spruce Meadows' season approaches
  • Newer Shawnee Park lawns are still filling in a decade after the first houses went up
06
June
Early summer
  • School lets out and Fish Creek's trailheads along the northern edge see the year's first real crowds
  • The platform at Fish Creek–Lacombe trades ice for shade as commuters wait
  • Thunderstorms building over the foothills are visible from the open ground where the back nine used to be
  • Shawnee Park's mixed-use row fills its patios for the first warm evenings
07
July
High summer
  • Stampede crowds use the South Line from the community's own platform rather than driving downtown
  • Fish Creek's valley floor runs several degrees cooler than the ridge streets above it
  • Macleod Trail backs up hardest on Stampede parade morning
  • The old golf course's mature trees are the only clue, on a hot afternoon, that Shawnee Park was ever a fairway
08
August
Late summer
  • Fish Creek's cottonwoods start dropping seed fluff along the escarpment trail
  • Southcentre's back-to-school traffic spills onto Macleod Trail through the month
  • Haze from western wildfires can pool in the creek valley on the stillest days, thick enough to blur the escarpment
  • A quiet stretch on the Fish Creek–Lacombe platform before the school-year traffic returns
09
September
Return
  • The Fish Creek–Lacombe platform fills back up with commuters once the summer lull ends
  • Aspen along the escarpment turn first, ahead of the street trees on either half of the community
  • Drop-off traffic thickens on both sides of Macleod Trail as Samuel W. Shaw and the elementary cluster restart
  • Shawnee Park's retail row gets its first real evening foot traffic once the heat breaks
10
October
Autumn
  • Colour moves down the escarpment into the valley floor a full week before it reaches the Shawnee Park streetscape
  • The first snow usually settles on Shawnee Park's newer roofs before it sticks on the older streets' bigger trees
  • Snow tires go on before Macleod Trail's first real freeze
  • The contrast between original bungalow yards and Shawnee Park's young trees is sharpest in autumn light
11
November
Early winter
  • The escarpment trail gets its first ice of the season on its shaded side
  • Dark commutes home mean the Fish Creek–Lacombe platform lights come on before five
  • Holiday windows go up along Shawnee Park's retail row well before Southcentre puts its own displays out
  • Wind off the open ground where the golf course once was makes Shawnee Park's newer streets feel colder than the older ones
12
December
Winter
  • The chinook arch shows first over the escarpment, and Shawnee Park's newer rooftops catch the warm light before the older streets do
  • The outdoor rink on the old fairways' pocket park opens once the freeze holds through a full week
  • The Fish Creek–Lacombe platform is at its coldest and darkest for the evening commute home
  • Fish Creek's trail stays groomed through the holiday break for walkers on both sides of Macleod Trail
