Live in Midnapore
A private lake, a provincial park on two sides, and a town that Calgary grew around.
Midnapore is not a new suburb with a lake bolted on. It was a named settlement before it was a Calgary neighbourhood, annexed on 30 December 1961 and built out around a lake dredged in the summer of 1976. The lake is 30 acres, the 2026 fee is $329.70, and 6,480 residents in 2,710 households share 2.9 km² between Fish Creek and Macleod Trail.
A town Calgary grew around
Bounded north and east by Fish Creek Provincial Park, south by Sun Valley Boulevard, and west by Macleod Trail. Two of the four sides are permanently protected parkland. Ward 14.
Midnapore began as an unincorporated hamlet under the Municipal District of Turner Valley No. 32: a settlement in its own right, not a subdivision. The hamlet and its adjoining lands were annexed by the City of Calgary on 30 December 1961, but residential development did not begin in earnest until the mid-1970s, when the lake was dug.
That sequence is why the community feels the way it does: a full tree canopy, curved 1970s street geometry, no construction dust, and a lake at the centre rather than at the edge of a new phase.
Housing mix. At the 2021 census 69% of households owned and 31% rented, the same split as Calgary as a whole. Half the occupied stock is single-detached, 15% is semi-detached, 15% is row housing and 19% is apartment in a building under five storeys. Nothing here rises above five storeys. Two thirds of it was built between 1961 and 1980 and another fifth in the 1980s, which means buyers here are almost always buying a forty-plus-year-old building.
Transit. Midnapore sits directly beside the Fish Creek–Lacombe CTrain station, open since 9 October 2001 at 14300 Shawnee Gate SW, with a pedestrian overpass across Macleod Trail and 1,130 park and ride spaces. It is 14.2 km south of the City Hall interlocking on the Red Line. That proximity does not show up in how people travel: 82% of employed residents drive to work and 6% take transit, against 77% and 9% across Calgary.

- 66% of occupied dwellings date from 1961 to 1980 and 21% from the 1980s. Only 3% was built after 2010
- Original windows and roofs from the first build wave are now well past their design life
- Poly-B plumbing was widely used in Alberta in this era and is an insurance flag
- Vermiculite insulation and older floor tile can contain asbestos
- Semi-detached and townhouse stock may be freehold or bare-land condo: verify on title
- The lake fee is a standing annual cost, $329.70 for 2026 and up 3% on the year before
How Midnapore got here
- Pre-1961An unincorporated hamlet under the Municipal District of Turner Valley No. 32, with its own town identity, hall and institutions. One of the older named settlements in the Calgary area.
- 1928Midnapore Hall opens on Bannister Road as the municipal building for the Town of Midnapore.
- 30 December 1961Annexation. The hamlet and adjoining lands are absorbed into the City of Calgary. The town hall is later converted into a Montessori school.
- Summer 1976The lake is dredged. 1.15 million cubic metres of earth moved; roughly 32,000 m³ of the spoil raises a 17-metre hill in the neighbouring park: the toboggan run.
- 1977 onwardThe modern community is built around the finished lake, and the Mid-Sun Community Association is registered on 9 May 1977 to serve Midnapore and Sundance. Two thirds of the occupied stock dates from 1961 to 1980 and another fifth from the 1980s.
- 2019The City's last civic census counts 7,266 residents in 2,898 dwellings, 2,742 of them occupied and 1,778 owner-occupied.
- 2021The federal census counts 6,480 residents in 2,710 private households, with a median household income of $91,000 in 2020 against $98,000 across Calgary, and 31 per cent of households renting.
- January 2026Midnapore Hall is demolished after a long period of abandonment, to considerable local dismay.

The second-largest urban park in Canada, at the end of the street
13.48 km² running 19 km east to west, with more than 100 km of trails and over 60 km of that paved. Bordered on three sides by the city and on the west by the Tsuu T'ina Nation. It is the second-largest urban park in Canada, after Rouge National Urban Park in Toronto.

What the map does not show: parkland on two boundaries is the most durable amenity in the community. Shops close, gyms relocate and fees rise, but a provincial park cannot be rezoned into townhouses. Flood note: Fish Creek has flooded. June 2005 destroyed seven pedestrian bridges and the park did not fully reopen until September 2007; June 2013 damaged it again. Ask any insurer about overland water coverage and check where a specific address sits relative to the flood fringe.

Showing 1–12 of 56 places, nearest first.
Method: straight-line distance between geocoded coordinates multiplied by 1.32 to approximate Calgary's road grid, then divided by a speed model that accounts for short trips being slower and highway runs faster. Ranges reflect off-peak to moderate traffic. Macleod Trail and Deerfoot Trail at 7–9am and 3:30–6pm will push the longer trips 5–15 minutes higher.

The free option is the best one. More than 100 km of trails on two sides of the community, over 60 km of it paved. For running and cycling that beats any membership within 20 km, and the lake fee already covers tennis and pickleball courts, basketball, disc golf, swimming, shore fishing and the boats.
Six schools in the community, a Catholic high school at Shawnessy, and a university
Midnapore School and Fish Creek School each run kindergarten to grade 9 inside the community, and MidSun takes grades 7 to 9 from Midnapore and Sundance. Wikipedia also places Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Father James Whelihan and Trinity Christian here. Bishop O'Byrne, the Catholic high school families use, is at 333 Shawville Boulevard SE in Shawnessy. St. Mary's University, a private Catholic university with 799 full-time-equivalent students, sits on the northern edge facing Fish Creek Park.
| School | Board | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Midnapore School | Calgary Board of Education | Kindergarten to grade 9 inside the community, with a Chinese (Mandarin) Bilingual programme. |
| Fish Creek School | Calgary Board of Education | Kindergarten to grade 9 inside the community. |
| MidSun School | Calgary Board of Education | Grades 7 to 9, named for the two communities it takes: Midnapore and Sundance. |
| Mother Teresa of Calcutta Elementary | Calgary Catholic | Wikipedia places it among the schools in Midnapore. The district's own site refuses automated clients, so nothing here was read from the district. |
| Father James Whelihan | Calgary Catholic | Catholic elementary and junior high, named by Wikipedia as a school in Midnapore. Not confirmed with the district, whose site refuses automated clients. |
| Trinity Christian School | Private | Independent Christian school, named by Wikipedia as a school in Midnapore. |
| Bishop O'Byrne High School | Calgary Catholic | Grades 10 to 12 at 333 Shawville Boulevard SE in Shawnessy, opened 2001, enrolment 1,600, with a grade 10 Honours and IB Diploma stream. Wikipedia names Bridlewood, Millrise and Shawnessy as the communities it serves, not Midnapore. |
| St. Mary's University | Post-secondary | Private Catholic university on the far northern edge of Midnapore, facing Fish Creek Park. Established 1986, 799 full-time-equivalent students in 2023 to 2024. |
Alberta funds Catholic education the same way it funds public education, so there is no tuition for a resident student at either board. School and activity fees, optional course fees and transportation are billed separately: confirm the current schedule with the school office. The Calgary Catholic School District's site refuses automated clients, so nothing on the Catholic side here was read from the district itself.

Honesty note. Where a photograph was taken in Fish Creek Park or in Calgary, the caption says so. Species shots taken elsewhere in Alberta are labelled as such. They show animals that genuinely use the Fish Creek corridor. The mountain and Okotoks images are regional context for what is reachable from south Calgary, not local amenities.
