Live in Starmount Forest
A 1930 golf course with postwar Cape Cod houses around it, where the point is zoned for an elementary school the state graded A, and 675 of the 2,865 residents of 2020 are zoned for one it graded C.
Starmount Forest is the City of Greensboro's name for 813 acres between West Friendly Avenue and West Market Street, where the 2020 census counted 2,865 residents in 1,151 housing units. Edward and Blanche Sternberger Benjamin cut it from the eastern part of the Hamilton Lakes development in 1927, opened Starmount Forest Country Club on the land in 1930, and saw most of the houses built after World War II; all of it has been inside the City since the 1957 annexation. The point is zoned for Sternberger Elementary, graded A for 2024-25, while 2,190 residents of 2020 are in its zone and 675 in Morehead Elementary's, graded C. No 2020 resident lives on a block in a mapped flood zone, and no published sale price follows this line.
A golf course first, and the houses after the war
An area the City of Greensboro's own neighborhood map draws: feature 138, "Starmount Forest", on the hosted layer the City publishes for its Neighborhood Traffic Management Program, 813 acres, wholly inside the City limits, so nothing was clipped. The City calls these polygons estimated, its companion point layer says they "should not be considered accurate", and this one is marked VERIFIED NO: it is not an association's territory or a plat, and this guide claims nothing about where residents think the name ends. Traced against the City's street centerlines, West Friendly Avenue runs along the north from Kemp Road West to Green Valley Road, except where the layer's separate Wedgewood area takes the blocks around Christ Church Road; Green Valley Road and the Wendover Avenue ramps form the east side; Starmount Drive, North Holden Road and West Market Street form the south; and Kemp Road West, shared with Hamilton Lakes, then lot lines down toward Staunton Drive and Westgate Drive, form the west. Madison Avenue, Dogwood Drive and Staunton Drive run through it, and the golf course of Starmount Forest Country Club fills its southwest. The small Starmount Farms area north of Friendly Avenue is a separate feature and not in this guide.
Starmount Forest began as the eastern part of somebody else's plan. Alfred Moore Scales's Town of Hamilton Lakes was incorporated in 1925, and in 1927 Edward and Blanche Sternberger Benjamin cut this land from it. The golf course came before most of the houses: Starmount Forest Country Club, founded by the Benjamins, opened its course on 1 August 1930, when West Market Street did not yet run past Sunset Hills. Building began in earnest after the war, and the City's 2007 architecture survey describes what went up: mostly one and one-and-a-half-story Cape Cod houses with Colonial Revival doorways and shutters, and the two-story houses on Madison Avenue. The whole area came into the City with the 1957 annexation, the year Friendly Center opened across Friendly Avenue.
The line on this page is the City's estimate, not a survey. It is feature 138 of the neighborhood map the City publishes on a layer for its Neighborhood Traffic Management Program, marked VERIFIED NO, and the City says its neighborhood points "should not be considered accurate". It is not an association's territory or a plat, and nothing here claims to know where residents think the name ends. Inside it, 813 acres between West Friendly Avenue, Green Valley Road, Starmount Drive and West Market Street, the 2020 census counted 2,865 residents in 1,151 housing units, 2.49 to a home. The club's course fills the southwest of the line, and 48 residents are inside the City's West Friendly Avenue neighborhood conservation overlay, whose rules were not read.
The school line runs through the middle. On Guilford County Schools' 2026-27 layers the point is zoned for Sternberger Elementary, graded A by the state in 2024-25 and 2023-24, and 2,190 of the 2020 residents are in its zone. The other 675, in the southwest, are zoned for Morehead Elementary on Tower Road, graded C in both years. Everyone goes on to Kiser Middle, graded C, and Grimsley High, graded B. The district lists Sternberger as meeting at the old Kiser Middle building on Benjamin Parkway; why, and until when, was not read. The tract holding most residents counts 4.7% of its people in college, with a margin of 84 on 142 undergraduates: the tract's figure, not this guide's.
The tax bill is two lines, on 2022 values. A house here pays Guilford County's 78.95 cents and the City's 79.85 cents per $100 for fiscal 2027, 158.80 in all, with no fire district. Senate Bill 889 kept the 2026 bills on the old values, which the state's ratio study put at 68.31% of sale prices in January 2025, and moved the County's 2026 reappraisal to the 2027 bill at rates not yet set. A buyer's first bill follows the seller's assessment; the next one will not. The County's relief programs take applications in June. Stormwater and solid waste come on the City's water bill, which two secondhand pages put at $1.80 to $4.68 and $5.50 a month: the City's own pages refused this site. Association dues were not read.
No sale price follows this line. Zillow's typical value for ZIP code 27403, which holds 1,441 of the residents, was $237,287 in August 2026, down 0.7%; 27410, with 1,424, was $358,322, up 0.7%. Both are ZIP-wide and include condominiums. What the line does have is distance: Route 9 stops on West Market Street about 0.6 km from the point every 30 minutes at midday, Route 7 runs on Friendly Avenue about 0.8 km away, Friendly Center's supermarkets are about 1.5 km by road, and Wesley Long Hospital about 2.2 km. No 2020 block is in a special flood hazard area, though 4.07% of the land is, along the creeks.

- Look the address up in Guilford County Schools' School Assignment Locator before you make an offer
- Ask where Sternberger Elementary will be meeting: the district lists it at the old Kiser Middle building
- Read the seller's 2026 tax bill as a one-year guide: the 2027 bill is on the 2026 reappraisal
- Pull FEMA's flood map at the address if the lot backs onto a creek
- Ask for the seller's last water bill, which carries the stormwater and solid waste fees
- Check the parcel against the West Friendly Avenue conservation overlay before planning an addition
How Starmount Forest got here
- 1925The Town of Hamilton Lakes, the development Starmount Forest was later cut from, is incorporated on 6 March, on 1,400 to 1,600 acres with 10 miles of road.
- 1927Edward and Blanche Sternberger Benjamin cut Starmount Forest from the eastern part of Hamilton Lakes, by the account of the City's 2007 architecture survey.
- 1930Starmount Forest Country Club, founded by Mr. and Mrs. Edward B. Benjamin, opens its course on 1 August, laid out by Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek; West Market Street does not yet reach past Sunset Hills.
- 1938The club co-hosts the first Greater Greensboro Open on 26 March, won by Sam Snead; it hosts the PGA Tour stop 16 times between 1938 and 1960.
- 1947The club hosts the United States Women's Open, won by Betty Jameson. House building in the subdivision has begun in earnest after the war, mostly one and one-and-a-half-story Cape Cod houses, with the two-story houses on Madison Avenue.
- 1956The club adds a swimming pool, and in May a fire destroys the original clubhouse.
- 1957The annexation brings the whole area into the City; the club's new clubhouse opens in the spring, and Friendly Center opens across Friendly Avenue in August.
- 1984The members buy the club from the Benjamin family and the Starmount Corporation.
- 2007The City's Historic Architecture Survey Update describes the subdivision's Minimal Traditional houses with Colonial Revival details; in October CBL & Associates contracts to buy Friendly Center and the Starmount Company's other retail and office holdings.
- 2020The census counts 2,865 residents in 1,151 housing units inside the line, none of them on a block in a special flood hazard area.
- 2026New FEMA flood panels take effect on 10 June, and Senate Bill 889, signed on 19 June, keeps the 2026 tax bills on the old values at 158.80 cents per $100.
A private course inside the line, the public greens just outside it
OpenStreetMap names no public park inside the line; the largest open ground in it is the Starmount Forest Country Club course, which is for members. The public greens are on the edges. Starmount Park, a City park at 3301 Starmount Drive, is about 0.5 km from the point in a straight line, just across Starmount Drive. The Greensboro Arboretum on Ashland Drive, in Lindley Park, is about 0.9 km south. North of Friendly Avenue, the Tanger Bicentennial Gardens on Hobbs Road and the Bog Garden in Benjamin Park are both within about 2 km by road.

What the map does not show: the creeks. The special flood hazard area covers 4.07% of the land, 1.32% of it floodway, in strips between the houses, so a lot on a creek needs FEMA's map read at the address. Park hours and amenities were not read.

Method: distances and drive times are computed from a representative point, OpenStreetMap's Starmount Forest place node near Wedgedale Avenue, using straight-line distance multiplied by a road factor and a tiered speed model: honest ranges, not routed times. Bus rows measure to the nearest stop.
Every gym within reach
There is no City recreation center inside the line. The nearest is the Lindley Recreation Center on Springwood Drive, about 1.6 km south in a straight line, beside the City's outdoor Lindley Park Pool; the indoor Greensboro Aquatic Center is on West Gate City Boulevard. Pool seasons were not read.

| Starmount Forest Country Club open | The private club inside the line, at One Sam Snead Drive: the golf course, tennis courts added in the late 1930s and a pool added in 1956, by membership. | 3–4 min |
The free option is the Arboretum's paths and Starmount Park, both just south of the line.
Two elementary zones, then one middle and one high school
Guilford County Schools assigns by the attendance zone of the parent's home. On its 2026-27 layers the point is zoned for Sternberger Elementary (graded A for 2024-25), Kiser Middle (C) and Grimsley High (B); 675 residents in the southwest are zoned for Morehead Elementary (C) instead. Three magnet elementaries are within 3 km, and the district fills most choice seats by lottery.
| School | Board | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Sternberger Elementary School | Guilford County Schools | 518 North Holden Road. The point is zoned for Sternberger on the district's 2026-27 elementary layer, and so are 2,190 of the 2,865 residents of 2020 by block. Graded A for 2024-25 (score 85, growth met) and A for 2023-24. The district's site layer says the school is meeting at the old Kiser Middle building, 716 Benjamin Parkway; why, and for how long, was not read. |
| Morehead Elementary School | Guilford County Schools | 4630 Tower Road, in Hamilton Lakes. The zone for the other 675 residents of 2020, in the southwest of the line, around the golf course. Graded C in 2024-25 (score 61, growth met) and C in 2023-24. It is also an Expressive Arts magnet, so part of its enrollment applies in. |
| Kiser Middle School | Guilford County Schools | 407 Campus Drive, about 2.6 km from the point in a straight line. The middle school zone for every 2020 resident. Graded C in 2024-25 (growth not met) and C in 2023-24. |
| Grimsley High School | Guilford County Schools | 801 North Josephine Boyd Street, about 2.8 km away. The high school zone for every 2020 resident. Graded B in 2024-25, when it exceeded growth, and B in 2023-24. |
| Magnet and choice programs | Guilford County Schools | Three magnet elementaries are within 3 km of the point: Brooks Global Studies (1.0 km, graded B), Morehead Expressive Arts (2.0 km, C) and General Greene Science and Technology (2.9 km, B). The district fills most choice seats by lottery, and some programs need an application and acceptance; the 2026-27 deadline was not read. |
| Grades and your address | Guilford County Schools | The grades are 2024-25 and 2023-24: the state says 2025-26 grades exist, but no school-level file for them was found. The zones are the district's own 2026-27 layers queried at one point; check the address in the School Assignment Locator. |
Check the address in the district's School Assignment Locator. The grades are 2024-25 and 2023-24: the state says 2025-26 grades exist, but no school-level file was found, and the choice application deadline was not read.
