Live in Vista Heights

A 1962 inner-city community pressed between Deerfoot Trail and the airport's industrial lands, with a city-owned golf course inside its own boundaries.

Vista Heights was established in 1962, a year after the Crossroads Community Association was registered to serve it along with Mayland Heights and Belfast. The City's boundary polygon computes to 1.13 km², which makes it one of the smaller communities on this site, and one of the closest to downtown of any community north of the river. At the 2021 census it held 2,300 residents in 795 private households, half of them renting, with a median household income of $74,000 in 2020 against $98,000 citywide. Forty-seven per cent of the occupied dwellings are row houses, the highest share in this batch.

01: The Community

Pressed against the airport lands, with a golf course inside its own boundaries

Bounded north by McKnight Boulevard, east by Barlow Trail, south by Memorial Drive and west by Deerfoot Trail, as the Crossroads Community Association gives the three-community area. Wikipedia puts Vista Heights' south edge on the Trans-Canada instead. The South Airways Industrial Area presses against the north and east. Ward 10 on the City's post-2021 boundaries; Wikipedia still gives Ward 5.

The Crossroads Community Association was registered on 10 August 1961 to serve Vista Heights, Mayland Heights and Belfast, and Vista Heights itself was established in 1962, as development finally reached this part of the northeast. Nothing we could open carries the 1910 annexation this guide used to claim, so it is gone.

At 1.1 km² by the City's own boundary polygon it is one of the smaller communities on this site. Deerfoot Trail forms the western boundary, McKnight Boulevard the northern one, Barlow Trail the eastern one and Memorial Drive the southern one, with the South Airways Industrial Area pressed directly against the north and east edges.

Housing mix. Vista Heights built out as bungalows and row housing, and it stayed that way: 47% of occupied dwellings are row houses, against 10% across Calgary, and half of all households rent. Median household income was $74,000 in 2020 against $98,000 citywide. It is also young and diverse: 25% of residents are under 15, against 18% citywide, and 38% are immigrants, against 33%.

The one genuine amenity of its own. McCall Lake Golf Course, a City course at 1600 32 Avenue N.E. with an 18-hole course and a 9-hole course, sits inside the community's own boundaries. Not many inner-city communities on this site can say that.

Worth knowing before you commit
A 1962 community
Inner-city and well connected, with the trade-offs of an industrial-adjacent address

  • 64% of the occupied stock was built in 1980 or before, and nothing at all since 2011. Original roofs, windows, furnaces and panels are at or past design life
  • Aluminum wiring and knob-and-tube were both still possible in this era; have it inspected specifically
  • The South Airways Industrial Area borders the community on two sides. Go and listen at different times of day
  • Flight paths in and out of Calgary International Airport are a real and constant consideration this close
  • Half of all households rent and 47% of dwellings are row houses, which means more turnover than most 1960s communities
  • No CTrain station sits inside the community; Rundle Station, at 2529 36 Street NE with 350 park-and-ride spaces, is a short bus or drive away

How Vista Heights got here

  • 1961The Crossroads Community Association is registered on August 10, formed to serve Mayland Heights, Belfast and Vista Heights.
  • 1962Vista Heights and Mayland Heights are established. Development in this part of the northeast did not begin until the 1960s.
  • 1985Rundle station opens on April 27 as part of the original northeast line.
  • 1988The Peter Lougheed Centre opens with 500 beds, a few minutes east.
  • 2021Federal census records 2,300 residents in 795 private households, half of them renting.
  • 2026Village Square Leisure Centre closes for upgrades on August 31, until the end of 2027.

McCall Lake's course, and the zoo's river valley two minutes across the Deerfoot

There is no river valley inside Vista Heights itself. What is inside is McCall Lake Golf Course, a City course at 1600 32 Avenue N.E. with an 18-hole course and a 9-hole course, open to anyone who books a tee time. For genuine river valley and wildlife, the Calgary Zoo and St. George's Island sit seven to eleven minutes away, just across the Deerfoot on Memorial Drive.

What the map does not show: a golf course inside your own community boundaries is a genuine rarity on this site, but it is not a substitute for parkland. There is no equivalent of Fish Creek or the Bow valley pathway system directly in Vista Heights. Prairie Winds Park, one of the northeast's big civic parks, is eleven to fifteen minutes northeast for playing fields and a spray park.

Method: distances and drive times are estimated from the centre of the community to each destination using Calgary's road grid, and are rounded to honest ranges rather than presented as precise figures. Vista Heights' numbers are unusual for the northeast: the zoo, downtown and the airport are all closer than from almost any other community on this site, because this is an inner-city address rather than an edge one.

04: Gyms & Fitness

Every gym within reach

The northeast is served by large civic facilities and a small cluster of chain gyms near Sunridge, rather than a dense private-club scene. The usual anchor, Village Square Leisure Centre, is closed for upgrades until the end of 2027, so the Genesis Centre carries the load. Confirm hours before you count on any of them.

  • Village Square Leisure Centre, the usual answer here, is closed for upgrades from 31 August 2026 until the end of 2027. Its arenas run until March 2027; its pool, gymnasium and fitness centre do not
  • Anytime Fitness and GoodLife both sit in the Sunridge retail area, six to nine minutes away, though neither publishes hours we could open
  • The community's own McCall Lake surroundings are the free option, two to four minutes from anywhere in Vista Heights

McCall Lake is seasonal and Village Square is shut. For the next year and a bit the free option shrinks to the community's own streets, and the nearest full City pool is not Village Square.

05: Schools

One K-9 inside the community, and nothing published above it

Vista Heights School runs kindergarten to grade 9 inside the community, with a full-day kindergarten and, in its own words, a small student population. That is a correction: this guide used to call it a K-6. Above grade 9 nothing is published. Sir John Franklin School, the junior high this guide once named as designated, gives no grade range and no attendance area on its own site, and no Catholic school is named for Vista Heights by Wikipedia or by the Crossroads Community Association.

Schools serving the community
SchoolBoardNote
Vista Heights SchoolCalgary Board of EducationKindergarten to grade 9 inside the community, with a full-day kindergarten and a small student population. Wikipedia still describes it as an elementary.
Sir John Franklin SchoolCalgary Board of EducationA CBE arts-centred school outside the community. Its site publishes no grade range and no attendance area, so the designation this guide once asserted is unconfirmed.
Designated schoolsBoth boardsThe CBE assigns a designated school by home address and program and publishes it only through the address search on its Find a School page. No Catholic school is named for Vista Heights by Wikipedia or by the Crossroads Community Association, and the Calgary Catholic School District's site refuses automated clients, so none is claimed here.

Alberta funds Catholic education the same way it funds public education, so there is no tuition for a resident student at either board. Confirm the designation for a specific address with the board before you buy: the CBE assigns a designated school by home address and program and publishes it only through the address search on its Find a School page, and the Calgary Catholic School District's site refuses automated clients.

Honesty note. This page uses only the general Calgary, seasonal, Alberta-wildlife and transit photography from the site's shared library: the Fish Creek and Midnapore-specific images used on the southeast pages are deliberately excluded, because this community sits in the inner northeast and those are not its surroundings. Nothing here is presented as a photograph of Vista Heights itself.
