Live in Kelvin Grove
A 1957 community with Rockyview General Hospital immediately across 14 Street and Henry Wise Wood High School on its own southern edge.
Kelvin Grove was established in 1957 on 0.8 km² between Glenmore Trail and 75 Avenue. At the 2021 census it held 1,805 residents in 840 private households, 42 per cent of them renting and 40 per cent of them one person, with a median household income of $88,000 in 2020. Rockyview General Hospital, over 650 beds and a 24-hour emergency department, sits directly across 14 Street to the west, and Henry Wise Wood High School occupies the community's own southern boundary on 75 Avenue. Seventy-one per cent of the occupied dwellings date from 1961 to 1980, and just over half of them are apartments, which is why turnover here looks nothing like its low-rental neighbours.
A 1957 community with a high school on its own boundary
Bounded by Glenmore Trail to the north, Elbow Drive to the east, 75 Avenue S to the south, and 14 Street W to the west. Ward 11, in the City's South sector.
Kelvin Grove was established in 1957: 0.8 km², 1,805 residents in 840 private households at the 2021 census, with 42% of households renting, the highest of the three CKE communities. Rockyview General Hospital, 7007 14 Street SW, over 650 beds and a 24-hour emergency department since 1966, sits directly across 14 Street to the west, and Henry Wise Wood High School occupies the community's own southern boundary on 75 Avenue.
The rental share is the real story here. At 42%, Kelvin Grove looks nothing like its low-turnover neighbours Chinook Park and Eagle Ridge. 71% of the occupied dwellings date from 1961 to 1980, and just over half of them are apartments: 28% in buildings above five storeys, 23% below. Only 42% are single-detached houses, against 55% citywide.
What it costs. Median household income was $88,000 in 2020: close to the citywide figure, and well below either of its two neighbours. 29% of households spend 30% or more of income on shelter, the highest share of the trio.
Henry Wise Wood brings a genuine benefit: a senior high running both International Baccalaureate and Gifted and Talented Education inside walking distance of most of the community. It also brings school-year traffic on 75 Avenue that a smaller pocket like Eagle Ridge never sees. Whether the community's own children are designated there is a separate question: the school's page does not say which communities it serves.
- 42% of households rent and just over half the occupied dwellings are apartments: do not expect the settled feel of Chinook Park or Eagle Ridge
- Rockyview's ambulance bay and parking pressure sit on the community's western edge
- 75 Avenue carries school traffic on drop-off and event evenings at Henry Wise Wood
- 71% of occupied dwellings date from 1961 to 1980: confirm the inspection history before buying
- No CTrain station inside the community: Heritage station, 12 Haddon Road SW, is a drive, not a walk
How Kelvin Grove got here
- 1957Kelvin Grove is established as a neighbourhood. The community association's own history puts its development in the 1960s, after Chinook Park in 1959 and Eagle Ridge in 1960.
- 1961The Chinook Park/Kelvin Grove/Eagle Ridge Community Association is registered as a provincial society on 27 September. Its hall at 1015 73 Avenue SW carries a 60-seat main hall, meeting rooms, a kitchen, tennis courts, an outdoor skating rink, a hockey rink and playfields.
- 1961–1980Build-out: 71 per cent of the community's occupied dwellings date from these two decades, and only 6 per cent from 2001 onward.
- 1966Rockyview General Hospital opens directly across 14 Street to the west. It now runs over 650 beds, a 24-hour emergency department, an intensive care unit and day surgery.
- 1981Heritage station opens on 25 May at 12 Haddon Road SW, on Calgary's first LRT line, 7.9 km south of the City Hall interlocking and east of the community.
- 2021The federal census counts 1,805 residents in 840 private households, 42 per cent renting, with a median household income of $88,000 in 2020 against the city's $98,000. Seventeen per cent of residents are 65 or over, against 13 per cent citywide.
The reservoir and Heritage Park, north of the community
North past Glenmore Trail, the Glenmore Reservoir's east arm and Heritage Park sit a short drive away. Neither is inside Kelvin Grove's own boundary, but both are closer than almost anywhere else in the city with this rental share.
What the map does not show: the reservoir is a five-minute drive rather than a walk from most of Kelvin Grove: it is Chinook Park and Eagle Ridge, immediately north and west, that actually border the water.

Method: distances and drive times are estimated from the centre of the community to each destination using Calgary's road grid, and are rounded to honest ranges rather than presented as precise figures. Henry Wise Wood and Rockyview sit close enough to walk; the reservoir and Heritage Park do not.
Every gym within reach
There is no large recreation centre inside the community. Southland Leisure Centre is the nearest full facility, with Henry Wise Wood's own gymnasium and the CKE rink covering the rest.
- 2000 Southland Dr. S.W.: wave pool, dive tank, water slides, climbing wall, weights and cardio, a gymnasium, squash and racquetball courts and arenas
- Henry Wise Wood's gymnasium is on the doorstep, though nothing the board publishes describes public community-use access
- The CKE Community Association, 1015 73 Avenue SW, runs an outdoor skating rink, a hockey rink and tennis courts
- The reservoir pathway, a few minutes' drive north, is the free option
| Facility | What it is | Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Southland Leisure Centre open | City-run at 2000 Southland Dr. S.W.: wave pool, dive tank, hot tub, steam room, water slides, kiddie pool, climbing wall, weights and cardio, cycle and fitness studios, gymnastic equipment, a gymnasium, squash and racquetball courts and arenas. | 7–11 min |
| Henry Wise Wood fitness facilities open | The school sits on the community's southern edge. Nothing the board publishes describes public community-use access to its gymnasium or weight room, so confirm it before you count on it. | 1–2 min |
| CKE Community Association rink open | The association's outdoor skating rink, hockey rink and tennis courts at 1015 73 Avenue SW, seasonal. | 2–4 min |
| Reservoir pathway open | Free option: the pathway along the Glenmore Reservoir's east arm. | 3–5 min |
The high school does double duty, in principle. Living on Kelvin Grove's southern streets puts Henry Wise Wood's own facilities closer than any paid option on this list, but confirm community access before you count on it.
A senior high on the boundary, everything else a short drive out
Henry Wise Wood High School sits on the community's own southern edge, running International Baccalaureate and GATE. Chinook Park School carries kindergarten to grade 6 just north, with French Immersion, regular programming and an Enhanced Educational Support class, and Woodman School picks up grades 7 to 9 south on Elbow Drive with Early and Late French Immersion.
| School | Board | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Henry Wise Wood High School | Calgary Board of Education | Public senior high on the community's own southern edge, running an International Baccalaureate programme and a Gifted and Talented Education programme alongside career and technology streams. Its page does not name the communities it serves. |
| Chinook Park School | Calgary Board of Education | Public kindergarten to grade 6 just north, with French Immersion, regular programming and an Enhanced Educational Support class. |
| Woodman School | Calgary Board of Education | Public grades 7 to 9 south on Elbow Drive, listed by the board as Woodman School rather than Woodman Junior High, running Early and Late French Immersion. Its page does not say which schools feed it. |
| St. Augustine School | Calgary Catholic School District | Catholic school in neighbouring Kingsland. The district's site refuses automated clients, so nothing about it was read from the district and its grade range is unverified here. Confirm the designation for a specific address. |
Alberta funds Catholic education the same way it funds public education, so there is no tuition for a resident student at either board. St. Augustine School in neighbouring Kingsland is the nearest Catholic option, though the district's site refuses automated clients, so nothing about it was read from the district itself. Confirm the designation for a specific address before you buy: no board page this guide could open prints an attendance area.
